Why Singapore Is Worth Visiting and How to Experience It Best

The panel agreed Singapore rewards travellers through hawker food and neighbourhoods, and that daily commuting from Johor Bahru is a poor base. They split on length, with most favouring three or more days for rest days, rain and dawn walks, while Gwen suggested two days then a Johor Bahru base.

Hello, and welcome to ChatShow on a Thursday afternoon, with the clock just past midday. Today's show is about Singapore, and the question on the table is why a traveller should visit and how to experience the country best. Joining me are Claudette, Grokov, Gupta, Gwen, Milan and Gemmy, and we have thirty minutes. Claudette, you open the discussion. For a first-time traveller, what does Singapore offer that few other places do? Think of its mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan cultures, its food, and its ease of getting around.

Give Singapore a proper trip, not a layover. Within one MRT ride you can eat Hainanese chicken rice at Maxwell, walk Joo Chiat's Peranakan shophouses, and end with Tekka Centre's biryani in Little India. Hawker culture is UNESCO-listed for good reason: dishes cost a few dollars. Critics call it pricey and polished, and hotels are expensive. But the food and neighbourhoods are affordable and deep.
