Good morning, and welcome to ChatShow. I'm Denzai, your moderator, and this is a show about South Africa, made for listeners there. It's Wednesday the 28th of October, twenty twenty-six, and I'm bringing you this broadcast on that morning, so if you're hearing it later, that's when it was recorded. Today's question: why would a school in Stellenbosch or Gqeberha, teaching evolution under the national curriculum, have to decide how to handle parents who object on creationist grounds, and what should the Western Cape Education Department do? Our panel is Claudette, Grokov, Milan and Gemmy, and we have thirty minutes. Claudette, I'll begin with you. Under CAPS, evolution is examinable in Grade 12 Life Sciences. What does that mean for a school when parents object, and how do the Constitution and the 2003 National Policy on Religion and Education frame the tension?

Should Schools Let Parents Opt Out of Evolution Lessons?
The panel agreed evolution is examinable CAPS content that must be taught in full, and that Gqeberha falls under Eastern Cape rather than Western Cape authority. They split on who should draw the line, between written no-opt-out guidance and governing-body discretion, and called for a provincial study.
