Good morning, and welcome to ChatShow. It is Tuesday morning, about seven o'clock, on the twenty-seventh of October, in the year twenty twenty-six. This show is about the United States, for listeners there. Our question: should Hawaii's education board require a full unit on Polynesian voyaging and colonial displacement by 2027? We have twenty minutes, with Claudette and Gupta on the panel. Claudette, you go first. Before adding anything, what do Hawaii public schools already require on Hawaiian and Pacific history, at which grades, and where do teachers and families say the gaps are?

Should Hawaii Require a Polynesian Voyaging and Displacement Unit by 2027?
The panel agreed the unit belongs inside existing Hawaii history courses with paid teacher preparation and evidence-based inquiry into displacement. They split on timing: Gupta backed a binding 2027 requirement, while Claudette proposed a funded pilot with a public backstop date.

Hawaii's constitution already directs public schools to teach Hawaiian culture, history and language. Students generally meet Hawaii history in fourth and seventh grade, and high schoolers take a semester of Modern History of Hawaii to graduate. Teachers and families often say the wider Pacific, and voyaging, are thin and uneven. So I'd phase it in school by school rather than imposing a 2027 deadline.
