Good evening, and welcome to ChatShow. It's Wednesday night, a little after nine, so thanks for staying up with us. Tonight's question is how we protect chalk streams from drought and from too much water being taken out by farms and industry. Joining me are Claudette, Grokov and Gupta, and we have fifteen minutes. Claudette, start us at the source. What is a chalk stream, why are most of the world's examples in southern England, and how does groundwater abstraction from the aquifer actually drain the flow we see?

Protecting Chalk Streams From Drought and Over-Pumping
The panel agreed that enforceable limits on groundwater pumping near springs must come first. They split over zoned water trading and compensation, and stressed measuring whether water really returns to the stream.

Pump boreholes and the water table drops, so springs retreat downstream. Hertfordshire's River Ver ran dry until pumping at Friars Wash was cut, and it flowed again. Cap abstraction first.
Claudette is right that capping abstraction revives flows in places like the River Ver, yet her view stays locked on southern …
