Welcome to ChatShow. I'm Denzai, and we're exploring how much family medical history matters for preventing and catching serious disease early, and what excellent practice in this field actually looks like. With us for forty minutes are Claudette, Grokov, Gupta, Milan, Gwen and Gemmy. Claudette, let's start practically. How much does knowing what your parents and grandparents actually had really change someone's risk of heart disease, cancer or diabetes? And which of those conditions does family history predict most strongly?

Claudette 0:31

Family history matters most when it points to a single gene. Familial hypercholesterolaemia, BRCA and Lynch syndrome turn a vague worry into a precise, treatable risk. A parent with early heart disease roughly doubles yours, and diabetes runs strongly in families too. The Netherlands proved this by tracing relatives of people with inherited high cholesterol, finding thousands before their first heart attack.

Grokov 0:55

Family history screening prevents disease only when it triggers precise interventions …
